This body of work is a collection of twenty-five cyanotype prints. All of which were created in my backyard throughout the summer. These cyanotypes depict fifteen native plants that were foraged or sourced by my own hands. They are common, every-day and mundane - most of which go unnoticed or unexperienced.
The Usual is an atmospheric, intentional and playful body of work. I am inspired by my immediate surroundings and the usual that occurs within it. I elevate the unnoticed, bringing more attention to the beauty and history that these tangible moments and inanimate objects hold and represent.
Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process that was developed in 1842. These cyanotypes are characterized by a shade of prussian blue. Theprocess uses two chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide - with water to fix the chemistry and then to develop.
I start off by coating my surfaces with the mixed chemistry. Once it’s dried, I then create compositions with the plants on top of the surfaces. Next, I utilize the sun for exposing the imagery. After the exposure, I then wash out my final image with water. Each cyanotype is one of a kind and cannot be replicated.
