2019
I draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings and the objects that surround me. My recent work documents human residue, specifically repetitively used tools and surfaces which become worn and marked, acting as evidence of time passing. By documenting these residual marks, I elevate the unnoticed and bring more attention to the beauty and history that these objects and residue hold.
This exhibition features work that is either cast or printed from actual objects or work that has been carefully copied from a surface and then altered. The time spent recreating tools and surfaces allows me to connect with them on a more intimate level and to reproduce the physical relationship that they have to the human body.
I am primarily drawn to glass-working and printmaking, I consistently use a matrix within my work that crosses media boundaries. The historical background of the two, similarities be-tween processes, and the involvement with community are why I’m driven to create with techniques such as screen-printing, sand-casting, frottage, and vinyl.
I am inspired by Oakland based artist G.A.T.S. (Graffiti Against the System) because he uses a variety of media in his practice and because of his involvement with his immediate community. I also connect my work to United Kingdom based artist Rachel Whiteread’s because of her casted negative spaces, simplified details, and intentional layering.
